About
Team SCE – In year 4 our team branches out
In 2008, a group of female cyclists organized Pittsburgh’s first women’s-only developmental bicycling racing team, geared for novice and intermediate racers. Our season was a complete success, as measured by participation, learning new riding and racing skills and improving fitness through a full season of group rides, skills workshops, charity and competitive racing.
Last year we expanded our roster, and continued our dedication to giving women the opportunity to compete and train in the lifelong sport of cycling without the burden of performance expectations. Our women’s team really gelled, and learned how to ride together In addition, in 2009 we expanded our team to include a men’s team as well! While 2010 brought another fun season racing as a strong team of racers and friends, and a huge cyclocross season, 2011 would bring even new experiences to our team.
This year we welcome new sponsors and are grateful for the continued support of our returning, loyal sponsors. Our women’s team is now branching out more into cyclocross and now – mountain biking! We continue to stretch out of our “comfort zone” and explore new aspects in the world of cycling. In addition, we have joined together with Team Iron City Bikes to organize and promote the Steel City Showdown! The team continues to gel on the bike and off , and there is definitely the sense that it will be another fabulous season for Team SCE .
Read on to learn about our team, a group of people who love to ride bikes and have fun!

Hi,
I’m new to the area and I’m interested in learning more about your cycling club! How often do you meet, how far, and what skill level?
Thank you!
Erin
Hi Erin,
We are mainly Cat 4 women, with one Cat 2 (Barb = awesome), and Cat 2,3,4 men. We do rides and are pretty active cycling in and around the ‘Burgh on the weekends (even in winter). Do you ride?
PG
Hi. I’ve recently returned to Pittsburgh after 17 years in CA and would like to get some info. about your women’s racing team. I raced road and ‘cross in Northern CA for 4 years, but haven’t raced since 2008. I’m a cat 3 and would like to get back into road racing in 2011. Are you recruiting new teammates? I won’t have my road or ‘cross bikes here till after the new year, but I’d love to go on some group rides with the team this winter. Thanks! Jen jenday32@yahoo.com
Hey Jen,
Sorry for the delay in response. Let’s definitely get together and go on a ride. The team has been into ‘cross lately, and so we haven’t been doing organized road rides, but perhaps if the weather clears a little be, we could hit the roads one weekend in December. We would also be happy to invite you to join us on our group rides when they get started up again (probably January).
Thanks,
Patty George

I’m interested in riding through the winter and cross sounds like a lot of fun and a new challenge. How do I found out when your rides are scheduled and open to newbies?
I would also be interested in potentially racing with the team next year (only raced tri’s before) so look forward to learning more about the team.
Thanks,
Mary
Hi Mary. That’s great! The best thing to do is contact our coach, Suzanne Atkinson. She has also started a developmental club called the Velo Femmes. It is a lot of fun!
