Steel City Endurance celebrates at the ACA Banquet

ACA Dinner and Awards Banquet
National Aviary

On Sunday night, Team SCE celebrated with the Pittsburgh Penguins. No, not the hockey team, but with the penguins at Penguin Point in the National Aviary. After enjoying a wonderful buffet dinner and reuniting with friends with whom we’d raced all summer, we celebrated many successes of the 2009 racing season. Notable on this list:
1. Carl Flink won the Men’s B race series, and the men’s team took 2nd in the B’s.
2. EJ Hubstenberger took 2nd in the Men’s C’s, and the men’s team took 2nd in the C’s.
3. Rachel won the Women’s Series, Kate took second, and Barb 3rd. The women won the team overall as well as most aggressive rider.
4. Suzanne won the Power-to-Weight competition at the banquet that very night!
But beyond these awards and rankings, Team SCE has even more to be proud of from the 2009 season. This was a big year for us. First, we expanded our team to field a men’s team, and they raced fabulously! EJ “catted up” to Cat 3. It has been a complete blast to ride long weekend rides and races with the guys and gals of SCE. Second, this was the second year for the women’s team, and the first or second complete season for many of us racing at all. Barb helped us with her on-the-bike, in-the-race coaching, and we learned to use team tactics – completely fun! Third, SCE continued to be a positive presence at the local and regional races, consistently supporting the women’s and men’s fields. Fourth, both the men and women got a taste of “racing out east” in Millersburg, and we are already planning more trips out that way and more stage races next season. Fifth, many of us even have become cyclocross racers – a new sport that brings new challenges (e.g., hurdles), and lots of fun.
Finally, we are extremely proud of Coach Suzanne, who continues to lead her team with her vision, enthusiasm, as well as coaching and clinics. This is an amazing group of people, led by an amazing coach, and we’re definitely looking forward to 2010!
So you see, Team SCE has a ton to celebrate.
